Our community has been through a lot due to the ongoing pandemic, and all of us are looking forward to resuming our normal habits and routines. While many things have changed, one thing has remained the same: our commitment to your health and safety.

Infection control has always been a top priority of our dental practice, and you may have seen that we take great pride in this. Our infection control processes are made so that when you receive care, it’s both safe and comfortable. We want to tell you about the infection control procedures we follow in our practice to keep the patients, staff, and the ones we come in contact with in our daily lives safe.

Our office follows infection control recommendations made by the American Dental Association (ADA), the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). We follow the activities of these agencies so that we are up-to-date on any new rulings or guidance that may be issued.

Upon the emergence of COVID-19, here are some additional measures we take to ensure your safety:
  • Our office will communicate with you beforehand to ask some screening questions. You’ll be asked those same questions again when you are in the office, and we will be taking your temperature. Based on your answers and if your temperature is 100.4°F or higher, we will need to reschedule your appointment.
  • We have hand sanitizer that we will ask you to use when you enter the office. You will also find some in other places in the office for you to use as needed.
  • You may see that our waiting room will no longer offer magazines, children’s toys and so forth, since those items are difficult to clean and disinfect. Similarly, please limit the personal belongings that you bring inside to your appointment.
  • Appointments will be managed to allow for social distancing between patients when possible. That might mean that you’re offered fewer options for scheduling your appointment. Please respect the social distancing requirement of 6 feet where practical.
  • We will do our best to allow greater time between patients to reduce waiting times for you, as well as to reduce the number of patients in the reception area at any one time. To that end, please consider calling from your car to check on the status of the reception area and be on time. Also, please come alone to your appointments. If needed, one guardian/caretaker is permitted, but they must remain in the reception area.
  • Please arrive with face masks/coverings for they will be required at all times for both patients and staff when appropriate.
  • An antiseptic mouth rinse will be used just prior to treatment for the health and safety of all. Where possible, expect changes in how we do certain procedures to eliminate or reduce the spread of aerosols and splatter during treatment. For example, for now we will be temporarily eliminating ultrasonic tools and teeth polishing during your teeth cleaning appointments until further notice.
  • Clear sneeze guard barriers between you and our front desk personnel will be used to aid in social distancing, and we ask that we all limit our conversations to what’s necessary to limit contact time. More regular and frequent sanitizing of high touch areas and items will be done for your health and safety. This includes door and other handles, light switches, countertops, etc.
We look forward to seeing you again and are happy to answer any questions you may have about the steps we take to keep you, and every patient, safe in our practice. To make an appointment, please call our office at 415-752-8311 .

Thank you for being our patient. We value your trust and loyalty and look forward to welcoming back our patients, neighbors, and friends.

Sincerely,
Dr. Leo Arellano

How does Biomimetic Dentistry differ from what is taught in Dental Schools?

How does Biomimetic Dentistry differ from what is taught in Dental Schools

In dental schools, the general philosophy is to fix a tooth with an emphasis on the long-term success of the restoration itself rather than the long-term survival of the tooth. That is, the stronger the restoration material is, then the better it is. In this case, a well-made gold crown may outlast the tooth. But that comes at the cost of drilling away good, healthy tooth structure. This process not only weakens the remaining tooth, but it further traumatizes the nerve risking a greater chance of the nerve dying and needing root canal treatment. Here, the tooth is adapted to … Continue reading

Air Abrasion for painless Dental Care in San Francisco

Air Abrasion for painless Dental Care

One of the most common aspects of dental care is anxiety. Many people are so afraid of the pain associated with dental treatment that they avoid care that will lead them to better oral health. Regular visits to the dentist are the best way to prevent invasive and costly treatments and to catch decay early enough for conservative care. When fillings are needed, there’s a technology, air abrasion, that eases the discomfort and apprehension that typically accompany this procedure.A filling is necessary when a tooth has decay. The first step in restoring such a tooth is to remove the decay. … Continue reading

What To Expect From Biomimetic Dentistry

Expect From Biomimetic Dentistry

Traditional dental techniques haven’t taken advantage of the advanced ceramics and adhesives developed by modern engineering and science. These new technologies allow dentists to use smaller onlays that work more like your own teeth than the large fillings and crowns used in traditional dentistry. Traditional techniques are also more prone to causing teeth to crack and leak thereby allowing bacteria to rot your teeth away from the inside and underneath fillings and crowns.Nonetheless, everything we do in dentistry can wear out or fail over time – just like our own teeth do. Yet most patients are concerned that failures of … Continue reading

Benefitting your entire body

Dental Care Benefitting your entire body

There are several hundred species of bacteria living in each person’s mouth. Most are not harmful; however, the few that are, do cause quite a disturbance. Dentists and hygienists have long battled the effects of bacteria in patients through regular cleanings and exams; and sometimes more aggressive treatments when tooth decay, gingivitis or advanced gum disease has set in. Now we are finding that oral health is supported and maintained with good bacteria. This makes perfect sense when you consider this is the way nature intended the body to work.If our bodies were made to handle the bacteria that float … Continue reading

Good oral care is more important than many may think

Good oral care is more important

According to reports, approximately 75% of all American adults have signs of periodontal (gum) disease. Nearly 30% exhibit signs of periodontitis, the severe form of the disease. There is reason to believe that oral health may have a significant impact on overall health. Recently, scientists have released literature suggesting a prevalent association between periodontal disease and other major health concerns.Studies have indicated three possible ways overall health may be affected by oral disease: First, the saliva contains the bacteria and inflammatory agents (cytokines) from the gums; micro-droplets of bacteria and cytokine-laden saliva can be inhaled into the lungs. This has … Continue reading

Progressive dental care in California

Progressive dental care in California

Dental care has evolved through the centuries, always benefiting from research and development. Historically, dentistry consisted of tooth extraction, with a few forward thinkers attempting repair or restoration with minimal effectiveness. Throughout the ages, researchers continued to add information and new techniques to the established dental knowledge of the era. As understanding of the oral cavity grew, the role of the dentist grew with it.From simply removing the tooth, dental care evolved into repair rather than remove as dentists began filling teeth. As knowledge grew, restoration became a successful technique and the dentist’s role expanded once again. The next step … Continue reading

Dental hygiene in Daly City starts with a professional cleaning

Dental hygiene professional cleaning

Less than 67 percent of Californians have had a professional dental cleaning in the past year, according to a report by the Kaiser Family Foundation. With the onslaught of over-the-counter teeth whiteners and cleaning products, many consumers may be given a false sense that these items can deliver the same caliber of dental hygiene afforded by a professional dental cleaning. The prime culprit for tooth decay and gum disease is plaque, a bacteria-laden film that accumulates on our teeth as soon as we eat or drink and hardens into yellow tartar in as little as 48 hours. Plaque and tartar can’t … Continue reading

Understanding tooth decay in San Francisco

Understanding tooth decay in San Francisco

In today’s fast-paced society, people frequently turn to snacks and fast food, bypassing a nutritious meal for one that is filled with starches and sugars. Unfortunately, many are oblivious to the detrimental effect these choices can have on their oral health. Oral bacteria thrive on the overabundance of starch and sugar and produce acids that can lead to tooth decay, which is the second most frequently occurring health disorder, surpassed only by the common cold. Although most often occurring in children, young adults, and seniors, decay can affect anyone of any age. Causes Oral bacteria, the acid they produce, saliva, … Continue reading
