San Francisco dentist provides dental crowns and bridges

Dental Crowns Bridges San Francisco

Dental crowns and bridges are familiar treatments that have been used for many years. However, they have changed and improved a great deal in recent times. San Francisco dentist, Dr. Leo Arellano, uses a number of new techniques and progressive procedures. Yet, in many cases, traditional crowns, or crown and bridge appliances, work quite effectively to meet the demands of the patient’s budget and timeline.

Dental crowns

Each tooth in your mouth is protected by a hard outer layer of enamel that provides strength. When the tooth is damaged from decay, accident, or trauma, it is important to restore it. The dental crown procedure involves creating and placing a custom-made cap on the tooth. Because the crown is made precisely to the dentist’s specifications, it is an exact match in terms of shade and shape.

Crowns are often used to:

  • Replace an old filling when the area of damage is so large that there is not enough tooth structure to support a new filling.
  • Strengthen a weak tooth to prevent breakage.
  • Anchor a dental bridge to replace a missing tooth.
  • Correct a cosmetic imperfection.
  • Protect a tooth after a root canal treatment.

Dental bridges

When a tooth is missing, a dental bridge is a common treatment. Even if the gap is not readily visible, the lost tooth should be replaced. The gap can interfere with proper function of the mouth, and lead to shifting of the remaining teeth. If teeth do begin to move, crowding or spaces may develop, creating traps for food particles and resulting in further damage.

The gap from the missing tooth is closed with a replacement tooth, a prosthetic known as a bridge. It is fused to dental crowns placed on each side of the space. A bridge is a time-tested, effective technique to replace a missing tooth.

I've been going to Dr. Arellano for about 20 years and I continue because of the excellent care and treatment I get with him and his whole office team. He is both professional and personable.
Recently I had a newer technique of gum surgery/grafting at his office called, "Pinhole Surgical Technique of gum grafting." I personally found this to be much easier to handle than the other style of gum grafting that I received years ago for the other side of my mouth. That worked, it was where part of my roof of my mouth was cut and surgically sewn onto the gum. However, I much prefer the pinhole technique. It was actually the easiest dental work I've had (beyond regular cleaning.) It didn't take too long and it didn't feel uncomfortable getting it done. I was swollen, but I think that happens regardless of what kind of gum grafting is done. I needed ibuprofin for a few days, no major pain. It healed well and just felt easy. I am not a fan of having any work done in my mouth because that's me, but this was the easiest work I've ever had done.
So, if you are debating which kind of surgery to do I personally would recommend the pinhole surgery.

We've gone to Dr Arellano for many years and have never been disappointed with any of the work he's done. Recently my husband broke a tooth and Leo got him in and had the tooth repaired within a few short hours. Service like that is very hard to finds these days. His office staff is fantastic. Nice people you are always glad to see. I would highly recommend Dr Arellano to anyone who is searching for an honest, competent, well trained dentist.
