April 2012 Newsletter

Oral Cancer Awareness Month
Hello and Happy April,
I hope you are doing well now that spring is in full swing. I know you will be busy enjoying the weather but I wanted to remind you that April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month. Oral cancer includes cancers of the lips, tongue, cheek, floor of the mouth, hard and soft palate, sinuses, and pharynx (throat). These cancers can be life-threatening if not diagnosed and treated early. In most cases the cancer will appear as a sore or growth that does not go away. Some other common signs and symptoms include:

. Swellings/thickenings, lumps or bumps, rough
spots/crusts/or eroded areas on the lips, gums, or other
  areas inside the mouth
. The development of velvety white, red, or speckled (white
and red) patches in the mouth
. Unexplained bleeding in the mouth
. Unexplained numbness, loss of feeling, or
pain/tenderness in any area of the face, mouth, or neck
. Persistent sores on the face, neck, or mouth that bleed
easily and do not heal within two weeks
. A soreness or feeling that something is caught in the
  back of the throat
. Difficulty chewing or swallowing, speaking, or moving the
  jaw or tongue
. Hoarseness, chronic sore throat, or changes in the voice
. Ear pain
. A change in the way your teeth or dentures fit together - a
  change in your "bite"
. Dramatic weight loss

You should have regular oral cancer screenings but if you are experiencing any of the above symptoms you should see your dentist immediately.

In the Mouth, Smoking Zaps Healthy Bacteria
ScienceDaily (Feb. 15, 2012) - According to a new study, smoking causes the body to turn against its own helpful bacteria, leaving smokers more vulnerable to disease. Despite the daily disturbance of brushing and flossing, the mouth of a healthy person contains a stable ecosystem of healthy bacteria. New research shows that the mouth of a smoker is a much more chaotic, diverse ecosystem -- and is much more susceptible to invasion by harmful bacteria.

As a group, smokers suffer from higher rates of oral diseases -- especially gum disease -- than do nonsmokers, which is a challenge for dentists, according to Purnima Kumar, assistant professor of periodontology at Ohio State University. She and her colleagues are involved in a multi-study investigation of the role the body's microbial communities play in preventing oral disease.

"The smoker's mouth kicks out the good bacteria, and the pathogens are called in," said Kumar. "So they're allowed to proliferate much more quickly than they would in a non-smoking environment."

Dr. Suzan Hahn - Welcome Back!
As you know, Dr. Hahn has been graciously helping us out with our dental hygiene appointments on a temporary basis. Noticing again the good working relationship that we had when she previously worked with us, we are happy to announce that arrangements have been made to have her stay on longer. Dr. Hahn brings her passion for dentistry and teamwork skills to our dental practice again.

Dr. Suzan Hahn has served as a dentist since graduating from UCSF Dental School in 1984. She has therefore been practicing general dentistry for twenty-five years. Approximately fifteen years ago, coincidental with the arrival of the first of her three children, Suzan became deeply interested in alternative health practices. Following this interest Suzan started a masters degree in Integrative Health at the California Institute of Integrative Studies where she discovered the father of biologic dentistry; Weston Price DDS. Her mission is to help people achieve optimal health, which she pursues through dentistry. Biologic/holistic/biocompatible dentistry is her passion. Suzan enjoys and has experience as an educational speaker for the Nourishing Our Children campaign, for the American Educational Bureau on health trends for Americans, and almost every day for her individual patients as they relax for a dental cleaning. Suzan has spent a number of years collaborating with other biologic dentists in the country to share information about what is new, what is time tested and where is the field of biologic dentistry going. Recently moved to Marin, Suzan splits her time between SF and Marin. She also works to achieve balance in her life among the demands as a mother, wife, and a working professional.
