San Francisco patients ask, “Will I need surgery to correct my sleep apnea?”

Does it feel like you never get a good night of sleep? When the alarm goes off, do you wonder if you’ve slept at all? For years doctors have told us that restful sleep is critical to your health and wellness. However, for some patients, sleepless nights are not caused by a challenging day at work, it’s caused by sleep apnea, a common condition that can affect your sleep.

Sleep apnea is a condition that causes patients to stop breathing when they sleep. These episodes of not breathing can last for more than 10 seconds and can happen over and over, up to 90 times each hour. Symptoms of sleep apnea include snoring, gasping for air that may wake you up, waking up with a dry throat and mouth, and unexplained headaches.

If you’ve been diagnosed with sleep apnea, you may wonder if you’ll need surgery or a machine used every night to address it. Getting treatment for sleep apnea is critical. During a sleep apnea episode, oxygen flow to the brain stops, which can lead to further medical problems. While surgery or a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine can be prescribed, many patients look for another option as surgery can be frightening and the CPAP machine can be uncomfortable and cumbersome.

Dr. Leo Arellano in San Francisco has helped many patients find relief from sleep apnea without an awkward machine or surgery. Instead, he fits the patient for an oral appliance, like that of a sports mouth guard, to wear while sleeping. The mouth appliance shifts the jaw, which prevents the tongue from covering up the airway.

I've been going to Dr. Arellano for about 20 years and I continue because of the excellent care and treatment I get with him and his whole office team. He is both professional and personable.
Recently I had a newer technique of gum surgery/grafting at his office called, "Pinhole Surgical Technique of gum grafting." I personally found this to be much easier to handle than the other style of gum grafting that I received years ago for the other side of my mouth. That worked, it was where part of my roof of my mouth was cut and surgically sewn onto the gum. However, I much prefer the pinhole technique. It was actually the easiest dental work I've had (beyond regular cleaning.) It didn't take too long and it didn't feel uncomfortable getting it done. I was swollen, but I think that happens regardless of what kind of gum grafting is done. I needed ibuprofin for a few days, no major pain. It healed well and just felt easy. I am not a fan of having any work done in my mouth because that's me, but this was the easiest work I've ever had done.
So, if you are debating which kind of surgery to do I personally would recommend the pinhole surgery.

We've gone to Dr Arellano for many years and have never been disappointed with any of the work he's done. Recently my husband broke a tooth and Leo got him in and had the tooth repaired within a few short hours. Service like that is very hard to finds these days. His office staff is fantastic. Nice people you are always glad to see. I would highly recommend Dr Arellano to anyone who is searching for an honest, competent, well trained dentist.
