People considering dental implants to replace missing teeth should know the following:

  1. What are dental implants? They are essentially replacement tooth root. Using the same material that many medical surgeons use to replace joints in the body, titanium, the replacement tooth roots are securely placed into the jawbone. They are strong and long lasting solutions to missing teeth.
  2. How long does it take to receive the new tooth? The process takes some time because it requires time for the bone to grow around the metal post. For some patients it takes several weeks, for others, several months. Once the bone has healed around to the post, a crown can be placed. Patients will likely receive temporary crowns to use during the healing process.
  3. Are dental implants safe? Implants are not only safe; they are good for the health of the mouth. When a tooth is lost, the surrounding teeth can become weak or shift. Additionally, without a tooth to stimulate it, the jawbone can begin to dissolve, causing bone loss. The implant provides the jawbone with necessary stimulation and gives proper support to the nearby teeth.
  4. Will anyone know the difference? Not unless the patient tells them. Dental crowns, the replacement tooth that others, will be able to see will be custom made. Advancements in technology have made it so that the replacement tooth can be a precise match in shade and shape to the natural teeth.
  5. Are they better than other alternatives? People considering dental implants likely know that there are other options. However, implants are usually preferred over dentures or bridges because they function so much like natural teeth. Where dentures sit above the gum line, implants become an integral part of the mouth. They don’t slip or shift while people are eating or speaking.

I've been going to Dr. Arellano for about 20 years and I continue because of the excellent care and treatment I get with him and his whole office team. He is both professional and personable.
Recently I had a newer technique of gum surgery/grafting at his office called, "Pinhole Surgical Technique of gum grafting." I personally found this to be much easier to handle than the other style of gum grafting that I received years ago for the other side of my mouth. That worked, it was where part of my roof of my mouth was cut and surgically sewn onto the gum. However, I much prefer the pinhole technique. It was actually the easiest dental work I've had (beyond regular cleaning.) It didn't take too long and it didn't feel uncomfortable getting it done. I was swollen, but I think that happens regardless of what kind of gum grafting is done. I needed ibuprofin for a few days, no major pain. It healed well and just felt easy. I am not a fan of having any work done in my mouth because that's me, but this was the easiest work I've ever had done.
So, if you are debating which kind of surgery to do I personally would recommend the pinhole surgery.

We've gone to Dr Arellano for many years and have never been disappointed with any of the work he's done. Recently my husband broke a tooth and Leo got him in and had the tooth repaired within a few short hours. Service like that is very hard to finds these days. His office staff is fantastic. Nice people you are always glad to see. I would highly recommend Dr Arellano to anyone who is searching for an honest, competent, well trained dentist.
