San Francisco dentist explains how the pinhole surgical technique can help patients suffering periodontal disease

f you have ever noticed bleeding gums after brushing, you are not alone. Many people spot a little ‘pink in the sink’ and assume that it is normal, or an indication that they brushed with too much pressure. However, bleeding gums are not normal. In fact, this is one of the early symptoms of gum disease. Other early signs include gums that are red or inflamed and persistent bad breath. A minimally invasive treatment for periodontal disease is now available in San Francisco.

Gum disease is a common infection, but one that can cause irreversible damage if not addressed early. Unfortunately, symptoms of gum disease are often overlooked, leading to the condition not being treated until it has progressed.

Stages of gum disease

  • Gingivitis is the least aggressive form. It can be treated effectively with a professional cleaning and improvement in home oral hygiene habits.
  • Periodontitis occurs if gingivitis goes untreated. Plaque that remains on teeth turns to tartar, both of which cause long-term gum inflammation if not removed. Over time, gum tissue begins to pull away from teeth, leaving large pockets between the gum line and tooth surface. These pockets hold infection, which can spread to bone and tissues in the mouth. It can also cause teeth to shift, and lead to tooth loss.

Treatment for periodontal disease can be invasive and complex, often requiring surgery for recession of gums. However, San Francisco dentist, Dr. Leo Arellano, is able to reposition gum tissue without using a scalpel. With a new treatment method known as Pinhole Surgical Technique, Dr. Arellano uses a small needle to create a hole in the gum. With special tools, he gently pulls the gum back into its proper position, with minimal side effects such as pain, bleeding, and inflammation.

To learn more about gum disease and the Pinhole Surgical Technique, call Dr. Leo Arellano today at 415-881-4343.

I've been going to Dr. Arellano for about 20 years and I continue because of the excellent care and treatment I get with him and his whole office team. He is both professional and personable.
Recently I had a newer technique of gum surgery/grafting at his office called, "Pinhole Surgical Technique of gum grafting." I personally found this to be much easier to handle than the other style of gum grafting that I received years ago for the other side of my mouth. That worked, it was where part of my roof of my mouth was cut and surgically sewn onto the gum. However, I much prefer the pinhole technique. It was actually the easiest dental work I've had (beyond regular cleaning.) It didn't take too long and it didn't feel uncomfortable getting it done. I was swollen, but I think that happens regardless of what kind of gum grafting is done. I needed ibuprofin for a few days, no major pain. It healed well and just felt easy. I am not a fan of having any work done in my mouth because that's me, but this was the easiest work I've ever had done.
So, if you are debating which kind of surgery to do I personally would recommend the pinhole surgery.

We've gone to Dr Arellano for many years and have never been disappointed with any of the work he's done. Recently my husband broke a tooth and Leo got him in and had the tooth repaired within a few short hours. Service like that is very hard to finds these days. His office staff is fantastic. Nice people you are always glad to see. I would highly recommend Dr Arellano to anyone who is searching for an honest, competent, well trained dentist.
