I had done veneers and invisalign in 2009. During that time, Dr. Arellano and his whole office staff provided excellent services. What Are Veneers?
Veneers are a way of cosmetically enhancing or repairing teeth. They are usually made in a dental laboratory with porcelain but can also be made with plastic composite material. There are usually two appointments to first prepare the teeth before taking impressions, and then a second appointment to fit and securely bond the veneers into place.
What Is the Difference Between Veneers and Crowns?
Veneers are typically very thin and cover only the parts of the teeth that can be seen. Because they are very thin, very little tooth structure is ground away. They are not meant to withstand strong chewing or biting forces. Crowns made with porcelain are thicker for strength, but more tooth structure must be ground away to accommodate their additional thickness. A full crown also completely covers a tooth.
What Are “Prepless” Veneers?
Although almost any type of porcelain or plastic composite veneer can be used, this type of veneer was made popular with Lumineer’s porcelain veneer advertising. Sometimes there are situations where the angle of the tooth requires almost no preparation or no preparation at all for a veneer. At other times, patients elect not to have any tooth structure ground away even though it may be indicated. The obvious advantage is that little to none of your natural tooth is ground away. But the big disadvantage if not indicated is that your teeth can look a lot thicker than normal, and that additional thickness might trap food next to the gum line.
